【大衆文化研究プロジェクト】総括シンポジウム「日本大衆文化研究の最前線—新しい日本像の創出にむけて―」が開催されます！

国際日本文化研究センターでは、2016年度より2021年度にかけて機関拠点型基幹研究プロジェクト「大衆文化の通時的・国際的研究による新しい日本像の創出（略称：大衆文化研究プロジェクト）」に取り組んでいます。当初は、古代・中世、近世、近代、現代の4班を編成しましたが、年次ごとに班を再編成し各班の横断・融合を図り、国内外の研究者と連携しながら、大衆文化の学際的・通時的な国際共同研究を推進してきました。その活動内容は、大衆文化の国際共同研究の実施のほか、大衆文化に関わる研究資源の収集とその発信や、大衆文化研究の成果発信と教育プログラムの開発、さらには、大衆文化研究を中心とした国際的な研究ネットワークの再構築を目指すものでもありました。とりわけ、大衆文化研究のための基本図書として利用されることも想定した「日文研大衆文化研究叢書」全5巻の刊行は、活動の集大成として位置づけられます。
６年間の活動を締めくくるこのシンポジウムは、若手研究者育成という目的から、中堅・若手の研究者がパネル企画を担い、「日本大衆文化研究の最前線―新しい日本像の創出にむけて―」と題して行い、4つのパネルを通して、これまでに取り組んだ大衆文化研究プロジェクト全体を検証・評価する機会としたいと思います。
なお、シンポジウムの最後は「国際日本研究」コンソーシアムのパネルとして、ヨーロッパとの対話から、「国際日本研究」の新たな展開と可能性について、考察を進めます。

Japanese Popular Culture Research Project
Announcing a General Symposium, “On the Front Lines of Japanese Popular Culture Research: Toward the Pursuit of New Images of Japan.”

From FY2016 through FY2021, the International Research Center for Japanese Studies has been engaged with an NIHU Transdisciplinary Project (Institute-based Project) titled “Historical and International Research into Popular Culture to Pursue New Images of Japan” (“Japanese Popular Culture Research Project”). At the outset, this Project was divided up into four teams doing research respectively on the ancient and medieval, early modern, modern, and contemporary periods. The teams were reorganized each year with the goal of crosscutting and blending among them. They collaborated with researchers in Japan and around the world in the effort to promote interdisciplinary and diachronic international team research on popular culture. The Project’s activities have aimed to carry out international collaborative research on popular culture; collect and disseminate research resources on popular culture; transmit the results on popular culture research and develop educational programs; and furthermore rebuild international research networks that are focused on popular culture research. Above all, the publication of the Nichibunken Popular Culture Research Series (Five-Volume)—which was also projected to be used as basic texts for popular culture research—was positioned to stand as a compilation of all the Project’s work.
This Symposium brings those six years of work to a close. With the goal of nurturing junior researchers, the panel programming has been left largely in the hands of junior and midcareer researchers. Under the title of “On the Front Lines of Japanese Popular Culture Research: Toward the Pursuit of New Images of Japan,” we hope that—through its four core panels—this Symposium will serve as an opportunity to scrutinize and evaluate all the work undertaken to date by the Japanese Popular Culture Research Project.
Furthermore, the Symposium concludes with a panel overseen by the Consortium for Global Japanese Studies that will weigh new developments and possibilities in global Japanese studies based on a dialogue with Europe.
